The Pulikla Tribe of Yurok People is a federally recognized tribe based in Klamath, California, made up of downriver Yurok people of the lower Klamath River.
The Pulikla Tribe of Yurok People is a federally recognized tribe based in Klamath, California, in Del Norte County. Pulikla means "downriver people," the traditional name for people who live in or descend from the villages along the lower Klamath River. On May 8, 2024, citizens voted to adopt the name in place of Resighini Rancheria, a name given by the federal government. Chairperson Fawn C. Murphy described the change as "a reclamation of who we are as Yurok people."
The ancestral lands of the Pulikla run along the Pacific coast from Damnation Creek south to Little River, and from the mouth of the Klamath River upstream to Slate Creek. The Pulikla entered into a treaty with the federal government in 1851 that was never ratified, and they are part of the original Klamath River Reservation of 1855. In 1938, land on Waukell Flat was conveyed to the U.S. Government for Native people of Del Norte and Humboldt Counties who had no allotment, and it was proclaimed a reservation in 1939. The tribal government was formed in 1975.
Citizens continue traditional fishing, hunting and gathering, and the Tribe has held workshops on making regalia necklaces and fish nets. Community programs and services include:
The Tribe is governed by a five-member Tribal Council elected to staggered two-year terms. It signed agreements with Redwood National and State Parks in 2023 and California State Parks in 2024 to co-manage resources in its ancestral territory.
